James Sturch
The Rocket Riders Men's Retreat was founded in the year 2000 by James Sturch of San Diego, California. James first attended the retreat at Raintree Ranch in October of 1996, then in April of the following year, both with the Soledad Men's Group. In September of 2000 he thought it would be a great place to bring our "Brother's" Group. With the help of George and Felix, he made it our special place to retreat. It is a place away from our daily lives, a time to venture out of our comfort zones, and a time for fellowship. The name "Rocket Riders" is in reference to page 25 of the Big Book. As stated on this web site it was a personal favorite of our brother Don Terrell, who through his enthusiasm, vitality, and often times zaniness, showed us how to love ourselves, love each other, and to get the most out of our program. The "rocket ride" is the vessel to free ourselves of the past, to live in the now, and to live happier, fuller lives. The Rocket Riders retreat celebrates this, and strengthens our sobriety. The Retreat was founded for the sole purpose of allowing men to share the joys of recovery in Alcoholics Anonymous.

Donny's Favorite Passage
There is a solution almost none of us liked the self-searching, the leveling of our pride, the confession of our shortcomings which the process requires for it successful consummation. But we saw that it really worked in others, and we had come to believe in the hopelessness and futility of life as we had been living it. When, therefore, we were approached by those in whom the problem had been solved, there was nothing left for us but to pick up the simple kit of spiritual tools laid at our feet. We have found much of heaven and we have been rocketed into a fourth dimension of existence of which we had not even dreamed. (Alcoholics Anonymous Page 25)
Donny T. even established a fund, which does not bear his name, to assure that no man will ever be turned away from the Retreat because he can't afford to attend.
